Grout Cleaning And The Equipment You Need

without comments

Any type of tiles that we might have at home or office, we certainly need the floor to be free of dirt after the installation of tiles. Now that’s a job which is almost as difficult as laying the floor itself. Grout is a cement-based compound used to install the tiles. It fills the gaps that are naturally created between the tiles during the process of installation. But these little pores in the grout attract dirt and over a period of time the joints on the floor tiles become very dull and black. Despite our constantly cleaning the floor to maintain it in top condition, there is hardly anything we can do about the discolored grout.

grout cleaning equipment

Cleaning grout is a very specific job and something that many cleaning contractors are unable to do execute to the desired level of satisfaction. The main reason is that the equipment required for cleaning grout is very different from the other kinds of cleaning equipment used at home. This cleaning essentially requires a deck brush with fine bristles. These bristles need to be very hard so as to remove the dirt stuck in the grout, yet they need to be soft at the same time and not cause any damage to the installation and finishing of the flooring.

The other important grout cleaning equipment is a hand held power scrubber. This is a mechanical version of the deck brush and is usually provided with a rotary head. The bristles enter the grout and throw out the dirt and other materials trapped in them. Hand held power scrubbers have a long handle for convenient of operation without causing any undue strain on your back.

The next level of equipment comprises of a low speed floor maintainer that works at a speed of about 200 rotations per minute. Truly speaking a commercial floor maintainer should have speeds of up to 2000 RPM. Getting a flooring contractor with a low speed floor maintainer isn’t really difficult, and that should suffice for most of the grout problems that we generally encounter.

However, if the floors have been completely neglected for many years at a stretch, the problem could be very severe and their cleaning would necessitate the use of a motor scrubber. This is a highly specialized machine and is specifically designed for being used by professional grout cleaning agencies.

Thankfully, these days we have suitable machine for removing and cleaning the most stubborn grout and thus afford to have shining new floors.

Grout Cleaning For Businesses

without comments

While modern construction materials and machines enable faster execution of projects and enable having spectacular places to work or reside, they have also posed new challenges as far as maintenance is concerned. Maintenance of exciting new flooring materials like tiles made from ceramic and stone etc. is not a simple affair and needs expert services of professionals and special purpose machines. While talking of tiles, the toughest thing about them is maintaining the grout. Especially, if you have commercial premises, keeping the grout clean is important.

In case your business premises have tiles, you would be aware of the complexities involved in its maintenance. Grout is vulnerable to attracting dirt, dust, mould and the like. While every commercial area has grout needing maintenance, certain places have grout that is of still more complex nature. That should bring to mind how difficult the cleaning the floors in kitchen restaurants could be. Restaurant kitchen floors have to be cleaned at night. Additionally, the grout needs to be scrubbed on a regular basis, lest it should become a serious issue. Restaurants cannot afford to put its reputation at stake. Cleanliness is of paramount importance.

Another place prone to getting a lot of dirty grout is a fitness club. The area within any fitness club that experiences most grout is the locker and shower room. Such places are most expected to remain spotless and no business would like having its name tarnished due unclean grout. That’s why such businesses are required to maintain spotless flooring and tiles. But, maintaining clean grout is a challenge and most establishments have neither the necessary equipment nor the expertise to do that. There are different levels of grout cleaning, and the easiest of them simply requires the right kind of brush and an energetic worker. Use Steam To Clean Grout

without comments

If you ever tried to examine your tiles from a close quarter, you must have observed deposits of dust particles and grime on the material that fills the gap between any two tiles. The material known as grout is essentially required for tiling of any surface, floor or wall, to join the opposite facial edges of any two tiles.

Tiles are not at all difficult to clean, most of us are aware of this. It is the grout that poses the challenge. The grout is very porous by nature and it porosity goes down till the floor substrate. Every time you wipe the floor, the grout being porous, absorbs all the grime and filth that you successfully removed from the tiles without much of an effort. So, you see the grout is a necessary evil.

We are aware that stains get more pronounced on lighter colors. That’s why you find darker grouts being used more often. But, even with darker shades you can see dirty spots in those areas that bear heavy traffic. Ideally, the cleaning operation should make all the area look similar and even-colored. That’s difficult to achieve, as inadvertently some areas are left unclean.

It’s true that no tile cleaner can efficiently clean the grout, as it is not able to penetrate through it thoroughly, though some acids might destroy the grout. Another option is to seal the grout by the application of sealants soon after grouting and cleaning. But, then again sealants may have to be applied at periodic intervals of a few years to keep the floor looking fresh and clean. Improper or insufficient cleaning before applying a sealant may forever seal the grime and dirt of the grout.

Grout is not very hard. Even the use of certain chemicals breaks it down easily. Improper use of not so desirable chemicals adds to the problem. Thus the only option left to extend the life of grout is the use of proper tile and cleaning methods.

It has been realized that steam is the Ultimate Grout Cleaner. As the concept of claiming with steam is rather new, it may be desirable to understand its working.

There are various forms of steam. Boiling water to 100o C creates the steam what you normally see at home. Further heating of water produces more steam to escape from the vessel while the temperature of water remains to be100oC. Now, if the vessel can be sealed, the water in the container can be heated beyond 100oC, without boiling it. This is because water needs more of heat energy for getting boiled and release steam under pressure. For producing such a steam, you need to heat water to around 180oC.

Steam produced under high pressure is called dry vapor stream. This steam is different than the domestic steam produced or used at home. Steam vapors that you normally see at home have a good content of water molecules too. Dry vapor steam, has a very low content of water vapors, usually below five percent, and thus derives its name. Water needs to be heated under pressure to get dry vapor steam. The absence of water molecules makes this steam super heated that is capable of entering deeper levels of the grout and thus give better results. But, mind you steam is produced but not delivered at high pressure. Its pressure at the point of release is controlled.

Chemical cleaners too are not able to give the desired results, as the solvent used is not pressurized to facilitate its penetration into the grout. Dry steam vapors under pressure can penetrate the grout after softening and throwing out the dirt and grime that remained deposited even at the lower layers of grout. The process doesn’t affect the structure of the grout. The equipment employed for cleaning the grout by using steam has a brush attachment. The brush facilitates the loosening of the top layer of filth and pushes it out to disable it to trickle back to the grout.

Please note that the pressure of steam produced by a small domestic steam cleaning equipment is insufficient to make it penetrate the grout and is thus unsuitable for carrying out the job. Commercial Steam cleaning machines operate at pressures of six bar or higher.

Grout Cleaning Brushes Are Just As Important As the Cleaner?

without comments

Most of us, while thinking of cleaning the grout lines, are concerned about the quality of the grout cleaner. But we tend to ignore the brushes needed for a successful execution of the job. There is none denying the fact that the quality of the cleaner matters the most, but a brush is the device that decides the effectiveness of a cleaner. It is the brush that causes the dirt and soil to loosen-up.

When you are checking out the brushes in your local stores, observe them more closely. A good one should look somewhat like a “V”. Then only it can go deeper into the grout lines and penetrate deep down, where the dirt is. The bristles need to be firm and long lasting. Imagine clearing the plaque of your teeth by using a toothbrush with soft bristles! It holds good for grout cleaning and grout brushes. Another feature you can ill afford to overlook is that the brush should be designed to fit on a long pole enabling you to work in a standing position. Otherwise be prepared to work on your knees and hands, a position that surely adds to your overall fatigue, not to mention the backache that it is very likely to cause.

If you plan to do it yourself, bear in mind that a good quality grout cleaner is just half the story. The other equally important part is the brush. Do not ignore its quality. A sub-standard brush makes the job all the more tedious, time consuming and uneconomical as you are forced to buy a better brush ultimately.

You must opt for a quality product, be it the grout cleaner or the brush. These are the essentials of doing an excellent job in the first attempt. Wouldn’t that be an economical way of doing it?

Cleaning Ceramic Tiles

without comments

You will find a lot of solutions when it comes to cleaning tile grout. There are many people who have their own tactics and chemicals in removing and cleaning grout. Do not think there is only one way in doing this properly. There are many options that work and can do the trick for you too. And so, I haven’t really got anything to add about grout cleaner that hasn’t been said before by someone else.

Many of us like how the ceramic tiles look in our home, but we sure do not like to keep them clean. It is not something we enjoy in, but we have to do it.

It is hard to clean the tiles, especially all those cracks and the grout. What you need to do is to find the suitable cleaning products for grout and apply the techniques that will bring results. There are many products available and different methods of cleaning. But the best thing is, they all strive to make this work a bit less strenuous then it once was.

The tiles are made from clay that was baked at very high temperature, so they would be strong. Some of the tiles are glazed, others aren’t. Ones that are, will be a lot easier to clean, because they have a layer of protection already. Unglazed ones are very porous and tend to hold the dirt in them. I really do hope you have glazes tiles, because they would be much easier to clean. And you won’t have to find specific grout cleaner for the job.

What you will have to do with unglazed tiles is to seal them. I talked about this in my previous posts on this blog. When you protect them, then it will be much easier to keep them looking good. The grout itself is made out of cement and sand or silicone. The silicone is much better, since it will resist a lot longer and is easier to clean.

You should take care to pick the right cleaner, because the tiles may be scratched with ease. Your goal is to eliminate the germs and mildew, while keeping the tiles undamaged. Too strong is not always too good. On the contrary.

The best way to do this is to keep the cleaner to sit there for a while. Apply it and let it do its business. It will soften the dirt and will allow you to clean the floor without hassle. Do not use a brush at this moment, because you may damage the floor. Grout cleaner should always be used with care, and you should read the instructions that come with it. Some of them are used in different ways than the others. Remember that.

While you are working, use rubber gloves and keep the room ventilated. Those are the basic safety precautions and I hope you will stick with them. It’s not hard to follow them anyway. Why risk it at all.

Clean the floor with the water several times. This will prevent the dirt from staying one the grout and sinking back in. After you do this several times, you can spray your floor with one of the products that will prevent the creation of mildew.

Tile Grouting And Sealing

without comments

Once you have chosen the new tiles for a room, you have to choose the grout. This seems like an unimportant item, but the color of the grout you choose will make a difference in how the tile floor looks. Deciding upon the spacing will also be important to the look of the floor. Make sure you follow these five rules of tiling a floor and you won’t go wrong:

Rule #1. Pick the right grout color
Grout comes in very many colors, so you have a real choice about the look. The grout shows between the tiles, so if you pick a color that contrasts with your tiles, you can end up with an almost checkerboard pattern. If you want the look to be monochromatic, pick a grout closet to the color of the tile. Remember, however that light grout will show dirt easily, so if your tiles AR light, you may want to have a slightly darker grout.

Rule #2. Use the right tools and materials
Get good quality grout and sealer, use a palette knife to spread the grout thinly and evenly and have a sponge and bucket nearby to wipe up excess.

Rule #3. Decide on the spacing
Most tiles have a built in spacers so you may not have a choice unless you want to make the space between the tiles larger. You may want a wider look, and if so you will have to buy spacers at a home improvement store. When you are laying the tiles, it is very important to have all the spaces the same size and so you should lay out the tiles on the floor with the spacers before you apply grout. If you use spacers, the only reason you would have different grout widths is if the tiles are crooked, so laying the tiles out evenly and carefully gluing them down in place is essential.

Rule #4. Use a grout sealer
Make sure you protect the grout with a sealer that will protect the grout from stains and damage. This is a time consuming job since you have to carefully apply it to the grout without getting it on the tile, but it is well worth it because your grout will last longer and retain its color longer.

Rule #5. Maintain the grout
You are going to be cleaning your tiles, of course, but care must be taken to clean the grout properly as well. Grout will attract dirt more readily than tile because of its texture and it may be slightly lower than the tile, so the mop will not reach it as well. Therefore you should occasionally use a small sponge to clean the grout separately by hand. You should also reseal the grout after a while since the sealer may become worn down.

Silicone Grout Sealer

without comments

Try acrylic silicone and be among those few who have proven its worth. I’ve known about the effects of acrylic silicone grout sealer for a long time. With that said, it gives you a little idea of how great this really is. For me, it seems that I get a lot more for my money and the durability is definitely better. I also find it easy to apply to floors, with som help from the brush. Just think about the effects of epoxy paints. This is how I see silicone grout sealer and the protection it makes. Som would say that its the best thing since sliced bread.

Silicone Grout Sealer

Silicone grout sealer is a good way to deal with moisture and dirt.

Yes, it will protect your tile floors and will keep them look young for a long time. And the small cracks we can have here and there will also be sealed with it. I know that some of you may think that there is a better solution for this. The truth is, maybe there is, I wouldn’t know. Why? Because this was more then enough for me and for people who used it. If there are any disadvantages, I wouldn’t know about them. At least not yet. Silicone grout sealer is a must in my opinion and will contribute to the grout a lot.

Silicone Tile Sealer

Personally, I’ve mostly been happy with what epoxy can do for me. I’m not an expert, but I’ve used it more then a dozen times. So now I’m thinking outside the box and I’m going to do something completely different my grout. I’m gonna use some epoxy paint I had to cover all those small patches and spaces between the tiles. I know that I will have to prepare the surface seriously and that it will cost me time. But I think that this could be a great solution. Epoxy is resistant to everything. Why not use it as a grout sealer? Once you use the grout cleaner and get rid of the dirt, what is stopping you from trying it?

My blog is dedicated to something different than epoxy, but I want to write about it too, if it is useful and can be used for other purpose. This is a way to learn how to solve problems. You probably used different material instead the one that usually solves certain problem. Well, that is just thinking out of the box. I can think of many reasons for applying silicone grout sealer. And this is really important to me.

Few things are as special and satisfying as a good silicone grout sealer when it comes to tiles. I suggest you try it too. And be serious about this, do it all by the book. You may want to learn how to apply it properly, it is not too complicated.
